IEEE P1704 IEEE Approved Draft Standard for Utility Industry End Device Communications Module

standard by IEEE, 03/08/2022

Full Description

Scope

This standard serves as the extension of (but not limited to) IEEE Std 1703 in regard to the devices and communications module physical hardware interfaces, reference signals, their description and. IEEE 1704 Communication modules are described as being attachable and removable to/from the IEEE 1704 Devices.

Purpose

Utility End Devices such as meters are becoming utilized as smart metering devices in Advanced Metering Infrastructure environments. The purpose of this standard is to define uniform physical characteristics for the communications devices that will be attaching/detaching to the IEEE Std 1377 utility end devices that communicate via IEEE Std 1703.

Abstract

New IEEE Standard - Active - Draft.Extension to IEEE Std 1703(TM), a??IEEE Standard for Local Area Network/Wide Area Network (LAN/WAN) Node Communication Protocol to Complement the Utility Industry End Device Data Tablesa??. This extension specifies the physical hardware interfaces and signals, such as logical interface and power (digital and mains), that link metrology devices to communications modules via the USB physical layer. The communication module described in this Standard is not integral (not on the same circuit board) with the metrology registers (circuit board) of the assembly. However the module is envisioned to partner with a device implementing measurement registers (energy, demand load, power quality and related quantities) that are semantically modeled using IEEE Std 1377(TM), a??IEEE Standard for Utility Industry Metering Communication Protocol Application Layer (End Device Data Tables)a?? and encapsulated for communication using IEEE Std 1703(TM) application layer messages.
