Preface

This is the second edition of CSA 056, Round wood piles. It supersedes the previous edition published in 1962 and replaces CSA O56-M79, Round wood piles.

The major changes in this edition include the following:

1. The 1962 imperial and 1979 metric editions of the Standard have been consolidated, and metric dimensions have been further refined to accommodate established imperial dimensions and measurements.

2. The definitions clause has been expanded, and terminology has been made consistent with other CSA wood standards.

3. In Table A.1, the metric size designation size 27 has changed to 28; the associated criteria and the imperial values have not been changed.

   This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Wood Piles, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Solid and Engineered Wood Products and the Strategic Steering Committee on Forest Products, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. It will be submitted to the Standards Council of Canada for approval as a National Standard of Canada.

   3. This publication was developed by consensus, which is defined by CSA Policy governing standardization — Code of good practice for standardization as “substantial agreement. Consensus implies much more than a simple majority, but not necessarily unanimity”. It is consistent with this definition that a member may be included in the Technical Committee list and yet not be in full agreement with all clauses of this publication.

Round wood piles

1. Scope

   
   

   1.1

   This Standard covers material, manufacturing, and dimensional requirements for untreated and treated

   round wood piles.

   
   

   1.2

   This Standard does not cover requirements for the preservative treatment of piles. Such requirements are specified in the CAN/CSA-O80 Series of Standards.

   
   

   1.3

   In CSA standards, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard.

   Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

   Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

   Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (nonmandatory) to define their application.

3. Definitions

The following definitions shall apply in this Standard:

Check — a lengthwise separation of the wood that usually extends across the annual rings, commonly

resulting from stresses set up in the wood during seasoning.
