This pub li cation represen ts a basi c standa rd for safe ope ration , substantia l and du r ab l e const r uc tio n , and acceptab l e pe rf o r mance o f di r ec t gas - fired circu lating hea ters for ag ri cu lt ural anima l con finemen t buildi ngs . It is the resu lt of yea r s o f expe ri ence i n t he manu f actu r e , t es ti ng , i ns tallatio n, ma i n t enance , inspec tio n and resea rch on di rec t gas -fired ci rcu lating hea ters for ag ri cu lt ural anima l con finemen t buildi ngs designed for the utilizatio n of gas . The re are ri sks of injury to pe rsons inhe ren t in some app li ances that, if comp letely eli minated, wou ld de fea t the utility of the app liance . The provisions in this Standa rd are intended to reduce such ri sks while retai ning the normal func tio n of the app li ance .
Nothing in this standa rd is to be conside red in any w ay as ind icati ng a measu r e of q ua lit y b eyond comp li ance w it h t he p r ovisions it contains . It is designed to all ow comp li ance of direct gas -fir ed circu lating hea ters for ag ri cu lt ural anima l con finemen t buildi ngs , the const ruc tio n and pe rformance of w hic h may exceed the various provisions speci fied he rein. In 1988 , Interna tio nal Approva l Se rvices -U.S. Inc . (f o r me rl y t he Ame ri can Gas Association labo rato ri es), deve loped its A.G.A. Requiremen t 5-88 on ag ri cu lt ural hea ters. This standa rd was used for design ce rti fication tes ti ng of gas -fired ag ri cu lt ural hea t ers by IAS U. S. In t eres t w as i nd icat ed i n 1990 to deve l op a na tio na ll y r ecogn iz ed standa r d, at w h ic h ti me IAS U. S. ag r eed to r e li n q u is h its standa r d to t he Z83 P r o j ec t . T he Z 83 C ommittee assigned t he activity to its const ructio n hea ter subcommittee .

T he A me ri can Nationa l Standa r ds Ins tit u t e (ANS I) w as contacted i n Octo ber 1994 to inform them tha t IAS U.S. w as unde rt aking t h is p r oj ec t unde r its C anvass Method sponso rship . A Canvass List was formed o f i n t e r es t ed pa rti es to exe r cise r ev i e w and app rova l of the standa rd. The A.G.A. (IAS U.S.) Requiremen ts Committee , an internal standa rds writi ng committee of IAS U.S., and a Techn ical Adviso r y Gr oup (TAG) comp ri sed of non -IAS interes ted pa rti es , w ere appointed to se rve as t he t echn ical adviso r s on t h is activity . T he projec t w as assigned the designation IAS U.S. LC 2.
IAS U.S. LC 2 provides cove rage for ne wly- p r oduced di r ec t - fi r ed ci r cu l ating hea t e r s p ri ma ril y i n t ended f o r use i n ag ri cu lt u r a l anima l con finemen t buildi ngs .
At its Decembe r 1, 1994 mee ting, the IAS U.S. Requiremen ts Committee reviewed and mod ified p r o p o s e d IA S U . S . LC 2 , i n li g h t o f recommenda tio ns deve loped previo usly by an ad hoc w o r king g r oup o f t he Z 83 const r uc tio n hea ter subcommittee .
By l e tt e r ballot dated Decembe r 22 , 1994 , ind ivid ua ls se lec ted to se rve on the Techn ical
Adviso ry Gr oup (TAG) w ere forw arded a copy o f p r oposed IA S U . S . LC 2 standa r d dated Decembe r 1994 . They w ere asked to rev ie w the document for techn ical accu racy. The resu lt s of t he ballot i nd icat ed t he document r e q u ir ed furt her review and deve lopment .
At its Feb ruary 2, 1995 mee ti ng, the IAS U.S. R e q u ir emen ts C ommittee mod i fi ed t he Decembe r 1994 draft of proposed IAS U.S. LC 2, in li ght of substantive comments rece iv ed from t he T echn ical A dviso r y Gr oup (T AG). Subsequent ly, a second draft of proposed IAS U.S. LC 2 dated Feb rua ry 1995 w as forw arded to t he TAG f o r t he ir r ev i e w. C omment w as rece iv ed tha t the standa rd shou ld be li mit ed to hea ters hav ing a nom ina l gas supp ly pressu re not exceed ing 1/2 psig . This comment was bas ed on a r ecommenda tio n made by t he GAMA Cont rols Division Standa rds Review Task Gr oup at its Feb ruary 1994 mee ting.
After TAG app rova l and mod ification in li ght of the above comment , a third draft of IAS U.S. LC 2 , dated M a r ch 1995 , w as p r epa r ed and dist rib uted to the canvass li st by letter ballot .
A June 15 , 1995 mee ti ng o f t he IA S Requiremen ts Committee was he ld in response to reques ts submitted by two parti cipants . Both i nd ivid ua l s o ri gina ll y voted “Objec t” on t he Canvass ballot dated Feb ruary 28, 1995 . In order to r eso l ve t he ob j ec tio ns , bot h i nd ivid ua l s agreed to change the ir vote to “Abstai n” on the Feb ruary 1995 ballot , provided a mee ti ng of the IAS Requiremen ts Committee was schedu led to add ress the ir comments pri or to a pub li c review submitta l to the Ame ri can Nationa l Standa rds Instit ute (ANS I).
A subsequent fou rt h draft of proposed IAS U. S. LC 2 dated June 1995 w as dist rib u t ed to t he TAG by ball ot . The TAG w as re q ues t ed to vote on w he t he r t he June 1995 d r a f t o f p r oposed IA S U . S . LC 2 w as r eady f o r dist rib utio n to the canvass li st.
I n vie w o f t he f avo r ab l e vote by t he TAG mem bers, the June 1995 Draft of proposed IAS U.S. LC 2 w as dist rib uted to and app roved by t he canvass li st by l e tt e r ballot and w as app roved by the Ame ri can Nationa l Standa rds Instit ute (ANS I) on March 8, 1996 .
