CSA Preface

This is the first edition of CSA C22.2 No. 61800-5-2, Adjustable speed electrical power drive

systems — Part 5-2: Safety requirements — Functional, which is an adoption, with Canadian deviations, of the identically titled IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) Standard 61800-5-2 (second edition, 2016-04). It is one in a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code.

For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as “CSA C22.2 No. 61800-5-2” throughout.

Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems will need to comply with the requirements within

CSA C22.2 No. 274-17, Adjustable speed drives, prior to using this Standard for conformity assessment.

This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard.

This Standard was reviewed for Canadian adoption by the CSA Integrated Committee on Adjustable Speed Drives, under the jurisdiction of the CSA Technical Committee on Industrial Products and the CSA Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.

This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.

Interpretations: The Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety has provided the following direction for the interpretations of standards under its jurisdiction: “The literal text shall be used in judging compliance of products with the safety requirements of this Standard. When the literal text cannot be applied to the product, such as for new materials or construction, and when a relevant CSA committee interpretation has not already been published, CSA Group’s procedures for interpretation shall be followed to determine the intended safety principle.”

Canadian deviations

The following deviations are intended to meet Canadian power drive systems (PDS) requirements and to align with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

1. Scope

   1.1A

   This standard is only applicable to the following:

   1. power conversion, drive control equipment, and interface circuits;

   2. servo drives and integral servo drive/motor combinations; and

   3. integrated PDS where the motor and adjustable speed drives are mechanically integrated into a single unit.

   
   

   1.2A

   This Standard applies only to devices connected to line voltages up to 34.5 kV, 50 Hz, or 60 Hz.

   
   

   1.3A

   The PDS(SR) covered by this Standard are for use in ordinary locations in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

   
   

   1.4A

   Requirements with respect to electrical, thermal, and energy safety considerations are covered in CSA C22.2 No. 274.

   
   

   1.5A

   This Standard does not apply to

   1. traction and electric vehicle drives;

   2. motors as covered by CSA C22.2 No. 100;

   3. cord connected drives;

   4. the motor portion of a motor and ASD system that is mechanically integrated into a single unit; and

   5. solid state, single phase motor speed controls rated 300 V and less, 20 A and less that are covered by CSA C22.2 No. 156.
