Full Description

Information in this article will be of interest to utilitymanagers because it can be used to provide designguidance with respect to the least-cost treatmentconfiguration that would best treat the raw water characteristicsof a particular facility. This study illustrates howthe different particle size distribution characteristics anddesign conditions (flow rate) affect the least-cost treatmentconfiguration regions and how this information can beused to provide design guidance with respect to the treatmentconfiguration that would best treat the raw watercharacteristics of interest.Previous investigations considered a limited set ofparticle size distribution characteristics and flow ratesand described the least-cost treatment process configurationsusing an aggregate measure of the particle sizedistribution. This study incorporates a larger range ofparticle size characteristics and design flow rates inorder to illustrate their effects on the least-cost designconfigurations. The study's major conclusions wouldaffect the process for designing water treatment plantsconsidering charge neutralization conditions, particularlywith respect to characterizing the influent particlesize distribution characteristics, and for providing anefficient method that could be used to initially estimatethe least-cost treatment configurations using the associatedfigures. Includes 28 references, tables, figures.
