Full Description

This article discusses the removal of a major groupof disinfection byproducts (DBPs), haloacetic acids(HAAs), in biologically active carbon (BAC) oracclimated granular activated carbon (GAC). Precursorremoval has been the main control strategy forDBPs. Using BAC to remove preformed HAAs is anew concept. Although it is known that water temperatureand empty bed contact time (EBCT) affectthe removal of HAAs in BAC, this study was undertakento gain a better understanding of how theseparameters affect removal. The results suggest that a10-min EBCT should be used for 4C waters and a 5-min EBCT should be used for waters at 10C orhigher. The results of this study could help utility managersbetter control HAAs by improving the general understandingof the effects of water temperature and EBCT.Information on HAA removal could be used to providean alternative technique for HAA control. Water supplierscould use the information to improve the design andoperation of GAC filters to achieve an effective reductionof HAAs. Enhanced HAA removal could help thewater industry better comply with DBP regulations, improve water quality, and protect public health. Includes 15 references, tables, figures.
