Full Description

There has been an increased interest in the content of water treatment plant residuals andthe proper disposal of these materials. One aspect that may not have been a focus untilrecently at many locations is naturally occurring radioactive material or NORM. Theprocess of removing trace minerals from water can actually concentrate the minerals inthe media used to remove them. This media can create higher concentrations of NORMor TENORM - technically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive materials. Many states have established rules and regulations for the treatment, handling, anddisposal of NORM and TENORM materials. This paper outlines some of the concerns, requirements, and disposal options that water treating facilities may have to consider.
