Full Description

Project goals for this slide presentation included:examine advanced treatmenttechnologies and disinfectantcombinations for estuarine water supplies;meet current and future regulations; and, meet water quality goals of water utilities. The goal of pilot testing was toexamine the effects of disinfectioncombinations on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. The testing period was fromSeptember 2005 to March 2006. The summary of the project includes: UV-treated train lead to lowest trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA)formation, followed by the advanced train;advanced trains formed higher concentrationsof brominated THMs;chlorine dioxide limited bromate formation, but formed high chlorate concentrations(up to 0.96 mg/L);chlorate concentrations were highest after theadvanced treatment train, followed by the UV-treatedtrain; source water bromide concentration had agreater effect on THM4 and HAA8 formationthan SUVA level; and, improving the treatment process by addingstrong pre- and intermediate oxidants and UVdisinfection, limit the impact of bromide onTHM4 and HAA8 formation.
