Full Description

Magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) is a relatively newwater treatment technology currently used in only a fewtreatment plants around the world. Because much of thepublished data on MIEX is based on laboratory- or pilotscaleexperiments, this first-of-its-kind study at the WannerooGroundwater Treatment Plant in Perth, WesternAustralia, was undertaken to obtain information on thetechnology's performance at a large scale (110 ML/d ofthe plant's total 225 ML/d capacity). At Wanneroo, theMIEX process is followed by conventional alum coagulation(MIEX-C), and this combined process operates inparallel with an enhanced alum coagulation (EC) treatmentprocess. The study results demonstrated that theMIEX-C process outperformed the EC process in reducingorganic carbon, ultraviolet-absorbing dissolvedorganic carbon at 254 nm, chlorine demand, trihalomethaneformation potential, turbidity, and color. Waterutility managers can consider the promising results fromthis study when deciding which technologies might bestsuit their water treatment requirements. Includes 36 references, tables, figures.
