AWWA JAW11037 Journal AWWA - Improved Methods of Designing Filter Boxes

Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 08/01/1984

Monk, Robert D.G.

Full Description

This article focuses on the factors that affect the relative location of filter media, water depth over the media, and the location of the filtered-water weir to achieve a cost-effective design for a conventional, constant-rate mode of operation. It is possible for negative pressures (pressures below atmospheric pressure) to develop in the filter medium, when the head loss at any particular location in the filter medium is greater than the hydrostatic pressure at that point. However, by understanding the hydraulics of filtration systems, using pilot-plant data, and calculating head losses in the underdrain system, which are fixed losses, shallower and more economical filter boxes can be designed. Step-by-step design procedures are provided, and modifications for design of declining-rate filters are outlined. Includes 2 references, figures.
