Full Description

Currently, the use of chlorine in water treatment plants is inevitable fordisinfection of drinking water in Korea. It is well known that trihalomethanes (THMs) and otherchlorinated byproducts are formed as a result of the reaction of chlorine with organics. The reported nation-wide concentration of THMs in Korean treated water was 13 ug/L. This study was undertaken to provide an explanation for such a low level of THM formation in Korea. The characteristics of THMs in Korean waters were investigated and compared with US data. This paper reports the results of this comparative study and offers some explanations for Korea's low level of disinfection byproducts in treated water. Includes 28 references, tables, figures.
