The principal law that governs pollution of US waterways is the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, or the Clean Water Act. Congress is working on legislation to reauthorize the CWA. This article offers an overview of provisions of the act, including provisions concerning construction grants, permits and regulations, and enforcement. Issues that have been raised during reauthorization considerations include funding, wetlands, and enforcement. An estimated reauthorization schedule is given. Tables list amendments to the CWA and major US code sections of the CWA. Includes tables.
