This article presents the findings of a MalcolmPirnie Inc. 2004 national survey of 71 water utilityindustry experts with regard to their views on thefuture issues facing U.S. utilities. The surveychallenged respondents to predict the future andoutline how utilities can best prepare themselves forupcoming issues. According to respondents, effectiveleadership and management are key to the success ofthe U.S. utility industry. Respondents also suggestedthat leadership and management will be very differentin the years ahead. The effective leader of thefuture will provide: emotional direction, drivingeffective interpersonal relationships at all levels;strategic thinking, driving development of visionand planning and operational excellence; and, businessand technical leadership, driving complexfinancial and environmental decision-making. Key tothis type of leadership in the future are successionplanning, strategic planning, and asset managementplan implementation today. Includes 5 references, figures.
