This article discusses experiments conducted to determine whether polymerized iron chloride is a more efficient coagulant that conventional ferric chloride. The preparation of polymerized iron chloride (PIC) by adding alkali to the stock solution or by heating a dilute solution of the iron salt forming a product called PIC-T is described. Results of laboratory, pilot-scale, and full-scale plant experiments indicate the following: iron species present in PIC solutions are more efficient for turbidity removal than those of conventional ferric chloride; the lower the temperature of the treated water below 15 degrees Centigrade, the greater the improvement is; and, the colder the treated water, the greater the PIC neutralization should be. Removal of organics does not appear to be improved by the use of PIC, although PIC solutions prepared by heating (PIC-T) optimize the removal of organic matter.
