Until recently, not much was known about Cryptosporidiumremoval by filtration during nonidealoperating periods. With the exception offormalin-inactivated oocysts, no reliable, quantitativesurrogates for live oocysts have been demonstrated fora variety of operational conditions and filtrationregimes. In this article, the authors demonstrate thatoocyst-sized microspheres may be a useful tool fordemonstrating and quantifying conventional and inlinefilter performance when data are available over awide range of oocyst and microsphere removals.Oocyst-sized microspheres are easier, safer, and lessexpensive to work with than Cryptosporidium. Inaddition, this approach may be useful to utility managersin assigning log removal credits for regulatorypurposes.This work provides an approach for determining arealizable, quantitative surrogate relationship betweenoocysts and oocyst-sized microsphere removals byfiltration. The article also emphasizes that, to be accurate,process evaluations must consider all operatingperiods, not just optimized operation. Includes 22 references, tables, figures.
