The Sistine Chapel: New HVAC System for Cultural Preservation

A dramatic rise in visitors posed environmental challenges to the frescoes on the Sistine Chapel's walls and ceiling. A new HVAC system, operational in October 2014, now maintains stable conditions to avoid cyclic effects and gradient accelerating aging of the artifacts. This article describes the challenges and system requirements and details the modeling, analysis, and design process used to develop this unique system.
